Chamber music highlights
Chamber music is the central part of my
output. The piece that epitomizes my early writing is THE
SUN AT MIDNIGHT, a quintet for flute, oboe, guitar, cello and piano
from 1977. It features cross-instrumental melodies, modal harmony, rhythm,
and additive metres. Shortly after I wrote RAINS OF SAILENDRA,
inspired by Javanese music, as a commission for the Canadian Federation
of University Women, as a result of winning their Creative Arts Award
in 1977. A major change in my music came with 1982's SPIRIT
REEL, which is based in a traditional folk music aesthetic, and
is written for violin and two-row diatonic button accordion (which I
play). My aim was to combine the spirit, warmth and joy of folk music
with the structure and forms of new music.
The button accordion is also featured in
BLUE OCEAN, from 1990, in which I explore my ongoing
interest in dance music from Cuba and the Congo. Rhythm and joy are
central to this piece, which begins my recent CBC Records CD of the
same name. I've also written more abstract chamber pieces, one of the
most successful of these being STRING QUARTET #2 from
1998 (also on the Blue Ocean CD and nominated for the Western
Canadian Music Awards, "Outstanding Classical Composition",
in 2004). The focus here is on emotions, moods, and textures. I have
written several pieces involving Balinese gender wayang quartet-- Balinese
music is a long-standing passion of mine.The gender is a ten-keyed bronze
metallophone, and a quartet of matched genders is traditionally used
to accompany the Balinese shadow puppet play. Recent gender pieces have
included MAYA, named after a Hindu story, for a mixed
ensemble of genders and Western instruments, TREE OF LIFE
for gender quartet alone, and, most recently, MAGIC PHOENiX
(2006) for Balinese gender wayang quartet and keyboard-with-sampler.
This last piece was premiered by Maja Gender in a GroundSwell concert
on June 3, 2007. Many of my newer pieces continue to be influenced by
traditional folk music, such as THE SUN AND THE MOON
for flute and cello, which is inspired by traditional Irish dance music.
Premiered in 2006 by Susan Hoeppner and Shauna Rolston, its movements
are "Hall of Mirrors (set of reels)", "Berceuse",
and "Veils", the last of which gradually returns to the reels
that began the piece.
Recent pieces include AMADOR
(2008) Tango for button accordion, violin, viola, cello and piano;
RIVER OF LIGHT (2006) for woodwind quintet, button
accordion and double bass; THE BAY OF NAPLES (2004)
for viola and button accordion, SPIRAL (2003) for two
violas, and WORLD DANCES (2002), a suite of five folk-inspired
pieces for violin, button accordion, and piano.
